Day in the Sky is an annual event put on by Shared Adventures that is designed to inspire and motivate physically and developmentally challenged individuals of all ages. We believe that in order to enhance people’s quality of life, it is imperative for people to experience outdoor recreation activities, while embracing their special needs. Therefore, at this year’s Day in The Sky, each participant will have the opportunity to partake in flight school,
amidst a static display of 50 planes and their informative pilots who will provide plane tours and hands-on lessons about the art and technicalities of aviation. Additionally, participants will be able to apply their new skills as pilots in a plane flight simulator.
This free event was originally conceived as an opportunity for special needs youth to have an empowering experience flying an aircraft at the Watsonville Airport. Our goals for this experiential day have evolved to focus on people of all ages and all abilities. This event also serves as a day to share resources and information that will enable empowerment and access to activities. Day in the Sky features a highly successful All Abilities Awareness & Accessibility Expo, featuring more than 50 exhibitors who provide free samples and demonstrations of their assistive technologies. These include accessible sports equipment, information from nonprofits, and other fun and educational interactive displays, including an exhibit on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) featuring the educational pathway towards a vocation in aviation. Adding to the festive atmosphere of the event, Day in the Sky includes music provided by local bands or DJS, clowns and face painters, bounce houses, dance performances, visits with live animals, a barbecue lunch, and much more.
Day in the Sky will undoubtedly make a huge positive impact on the participants with and without disabilities because of the integrative scene and focus on awareness of people’s special needs and accessibility. The event encourages community involvement by engaging volunteers to make the experiences as special as possible for the individuals who participate. Shared Adventures aims to provide the disabled population and their families with the maximum opportunity to participate in an active lifestyle by creating a unique worry-free environment in which the participants and their families can share positive experiences, resulting in family and community bonding.
All event activities are free to participating individuals, families, friends, volunteers, and pilots. This event is funded by corporate and private sponsors as well as foundation grants.
The 10th Annual Day in the Sky will take place on Saturday May 3rd, 2014 from 10am-3pm. Registration for participants, vendors, and volunteers can be found at www.sharedadventures.org/
